The Ellinson Family

Lisa and her two boys became homeowners in summer 2021 at our first Blackfalds build. Growing up in Blackfalds, it has always been important to Lisa to raise her boys there. They were living in a rented trailer with a long list of safety and structural issues that were hard to keep up with, in addition to experiencing crime and theft in their neighborhood. With more downs than ups, their place never felt like home, albeit a roof over their heads.

Lisa found out about Habitat Red Deer from her dad and applied because she didn’t want to feel trapped in a home that was falling apart and costing more money to fix. She always dreamed of giving her sons a house worth calling home, and this Habitat opportunity offered a sense of relief knowing they will always feel safe and can make lifelong friends with their new neighbors! With dreams of taking the boys to Disneyland one day, having a decent home will provide the stable foundation to help them realize their future goals. Lisa says applying for a Habitat home is the best thing she has done for her family, and worth every emotion through the process. As a single parent, Lisa is working hard to provide the home her children need, to see them grow and learn in a safe environment. To Lisa, is no better reason than to do it for your children.

Lisa volunteers at the Blackfalds Food Bank and spent many days volunteering on site this past year helping to build her home. She sends her appreciation and thanks to all the wonderful people selflessly volunteering their time to support Habitat, saying: “You are truly amazing, and we would not have this opportunity without you all.”

We are committed to helping families like Lisa’s throughout Central Alberta, building homes and building hope with the help of our community!
