Dawn and her 3 children moved into their new Blackfalds home in summer 2021! Born and raised in Red Deer, Dawn heeded her mom’s suggestion to apply for Habitat home. Although initially nervous Dawn followed through because she wanted a safe home for her children, to feel a sense of pride when coming home, and lastly – to become an official homeowner!

In her previous home, Dawn shared a room with her daughter and the constant issues with the house were overwhelming at times from plumbing problems to pests and leaks. Her oldest son knew all the goings-on in the house and said it just didn’t feel like home.

The family is happy to have their own space and excited for a larger kitchen, more than one bathroom, and to finally get a cat (says her son)! They plan to build a fence, set up a play space outside and finish the basement. With the stability of a safe place to live, the family hopes to continue their annual camping trips with hopes to finally make it all the way across the country on a family road trip.

Dawn is passionate about supporting community organizations through volunteer work. She says that although volunteering every weekend to complete her partnership hours while working full time and raising three children can be difficult, it is so worth it! Her son was our youngest volunteer at 8 years old and contributed to partnership hours by volunteering at the Humane Society and supporting Habitat with art and writing projects like ‘Meaning of Home’.

Celebrating a new chapter in their lives, Dawn says her children will know that this is their forever home, and that ‘Mom has their back!’.
