About the Homes

Habitat for Humanity offers low-income working families a hand up, not a hand out!

Habitat Red Deer does not give away free houses, but promotes affordable homeownership by working in partnership with families. We build new homes with volunteer labor and community support with contributions of donated materials and funds. The homes are then sold to the selected family at the appraised value upon completion.

The family enters a no down-payment, zero-interest affordable mortgage with Habitat Red Deer, with payments set at no more than 30% of the family’s gross income. The mortgages have some special terms, such as requiring that the homeowners remain the principal occupants of the home and keeping it in proper repair. Should the homeowners choose to move they may sell it back to Habitat at any time, and a new family will then be selected to purchase the home
