Celebrating International Women's Day

This year, we are celebrating women in our Affordable Homeownership Program. In 2023, 47% of families across Canada moving into new Habitat homes were women-led, single-parent households. Three of the four families moving into Red Deer Evergreen are women-led, single-parent households.

The Halladay Family is one of the women lead future homeowner families for Red Deer Evergreen, comprised of Christina and her daughter Liberty. Christina shared with us her thoughts and feelings about International Women's Day and being a women-led family.

"To me, International Women’s Day is a day to celebrate the collective accomplishments, struggles, and experience of women around the world; all of which transcend culture, socio-economical status, age, and ethnicity. We as women are the mothers, sisters, friends, caregivers and change-makers of the world; the roles we take on are numerous and, at times, insurmountable. Through International Women’s Day, our contributions are acknowledged, and the obstacles of societal construct brought to the forefront to be discussed, debated, and one can hope, eventually eliminated. It is a day to remind women to support other women, to build them up, to show love and respect and understanding to them, and to raise our daughters to do the same.

Habitat for Humanity often provides support for single parents in a women-led household. This support is needed and very much appreciated by families such as my own. Being able to be a homeowner enables me to have stability and financial independence, allowing me to model for my daughter a life I can hope for her as she grows. It is empowering to be able to pave the path for her to build her own stable, secure, and happy future."

We recognize that the land on which we work, gather, and live is within the territory of the Blackfoot, Tsuu T’ina, and Stoney Nakoda peoples and that the Central Alberta region we serve falls under Treaty 6, traditional Métis, Cree, and Saulteaux territory. We acknowledge and honour the First Peoples who have lived here since time immemorial. We stand with the Indigenous peoples of Alberta and continue to advocate for reconciliation.
