The Habitat Model: A Hand Up, Not a Handout, into Affordable Homeownership

Updated: Jul 22, 2022

"You just give people free homes?" "I wish someone would just give me a house!"

One thing our team encounters a lot when out in the community and spreading awareness to people not already familiar with our work, are misconceptions about the Habitat model.

Our partner families are hard-working Central Alberta families to which affordable homeownership would never be attainable due to the rising cost of housing and the inability to be able to ever produce a large down payment.

Every partner family must complete 500 volunteer hours on either their own home build or within the community prior to taking possession of their home.

Our partner families and the Habitat model is exactly that--- a partnership. Habitat families are proactive, not passive; and they are invested from the beginning, not simply receiving.

When you support Habitat for Humanity Red Deer & ReStore, you help lend a hand up into affordable homeownership and help us build strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter.
